VERDICT DUE IN FIRST FOX HUNT TRIAL

Press Association, The Guardian

A verdict is due on Friday in the trial of a huntsman accused of illegally pursuing foxes across Exmoor.

Exmoor Foxhounds huntsman Tony Wright, 52, of Exmoor Kennels, Simonsbath, Somerset, has pleaded not guilty at Barnstaple Magistrates' Court to a charge of hunting a fox on April 29 last year contrary to the Hunting Act 2004.
The week-long case has been heard by District Judge Paul Palmer.
The private prosecution by the League Against Cruel Sports was the first in England relating to a fox or stag hunt brought under the Act, which became law in February last year.
The prosecution followed video evidence of the meet gathered by league officers Edmund Shepherd and Graham Floyd.

The court heard the Foxhounds said they were operating under an "exempt hunting" provision in the Act.
